Online Dating Apps Don’t Work For Most of Us. Here’s Why.
eHarmony: Pros and Cons
Is eHarmony worth your time in 2020?
We’re in the golden age of digital dating. You’re now more likely to meet a romantic partner online than through your other personal contacts.
According to a 2019 study conducted by Stanford. At a time when it seems like there’s always another new dating app to download, many marriage-minded singles still opt for eHarmony, one of the most well-known dating sites in the market.
Since eHarmony’s launch in 2000, this site is one of the go-to destinations for singles that are serious about settling down and finding long-term, meaningful relationships that last.
The global company claims someone finds love on eHarmony every 14 minutes.
With statistics like that, we couldn’t help but wonder: is eHarmony still worth the hype in 2020?
Free: Online dating success in 5 easy steps
Online dating can be frustrating and time consuming, with limited if any results. Or maybe you just don’t know where to start.
eHarmony’s price tag
eHarmony may be one of the most popular online dating sites but joining will hit your wallet hard. It is the most expensive online dating site out there.
If you want to get a feel for eHarmony, try its basic membership first just to get a sense of how it works. The reality is, there’s not much you can do on the site without upgrading to a premium membership. You’re going to need to commit to the app before you can really use eHarmony’s functionally. For example, with the free version, you can’t view your match’s photos, discover their distance, see who’s viewed you or enjoy unlimited messaging until you make that initial financial investment.
Membership plans range between 6 months, 12 months, or 24-month options. Here’s what the subscription plan prices look like as of spring 2020:
- One month = $59.95 per month
- Six-months = $39.95 per month
- 12-months = $18.95 per month
Keeping this in mind, be sure to consider some of our experience with eHarmony. Here are just a few of the pros and cons of this iconic dating site you should check out before you sign up.
PRO: Compatible matches
Unlike many other popular dating sites and apps where people choose to leave their profiles blank or simply full of emojis, eHarmony requires its members to complete a Compatibility Quiz.
This quiz of 80 multiple choice and open-ended questions is specifically designed to help you find your match based on values, habits, attitudes, and interests.
If you’re honest with your answers, the greater the chance of eHarmony’s algorithm finding the best match for you.
What our team loves about eHarmony is that the site attracts a wide range of customers, from single parents to people over 50+ who are looking for love.
CON: A long sign up process
According to eHarmony.com, the basic profile takes about ten minutes to set up and the mandatory “Compatibility Quiz” takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
Although it doesn’t sound like too much of a time commitment, it’s a significantly longer sign-up process than other dating apps in the market. The process can take even more time when you want your answers to highlight the best version of yourself.
Not only does it gobble up a lot of time, but it also is the most expensive.
It’s a personality test, not the SATs. So, make the most of it. And hey, look on the bright side: The Compatibility Quiz is much more time efficient as eHarmony’s previous questionnaire. The older version was 150 multiple-choice questions long and had been used for over 16 years.
PRO: Matches are in it for the long haul
Confession time. We’re all guilty of keeping our fingers crossed for a rom-com worthy meet-cute. Those cheesy movie clichés are popular for a reason. But the truth is that it’s not as easy to strike up a conversation with that cute girl at the bar like it is on the big screen.
Now that 30 percent of U.S adults have used an online dating app or site according to a 2019 study conducted by Pew Research, looking for your next love interest through your phone has become the norm.
There’s always a chance that your match can lead to something more, but only if you know where to look.
Signing up for a site like eHarmony makes it easier to connect with people who want the same thing as you do: a long-term relationship and someone to binge-watch Tiger King with on lazy Sundays.
While that’s obviously not impossible for apps like Tinder or Bumble, chances are you’re likely to run into singles who are swiping right for something more casual and probably won’t want to share their Netflix password with you.
If you’re looking for a relationship, it only makes sense to sign up for a relationship-focused app.
CON: There’s more pressure
Let’s get real. When you’re signing up for eHarmony, the assumption is that you’re dating to put a ring on it.
No matter how casual your first date with someone that you met on eHarmony might be, chances are you’ll both feel like the stakes are higher. After all, you both know that you’re looking for a long-term commitment. This can make the first few dates a bit more stressful, especially if you’ve just recently decided that it’s time to find a meaningful relationship.
Our advice: Start off a conversation by using eHarmony’s “Break the Ice” feature. These interactive games and questions are a fun way to keep the guesswork out of making the first move.
Once you’re more comfortable with one another, use eHarmony’s new “Video Date” feature.
eHarmony’s new video date feature gives users the chance to suggest a virtual date with a match sooner. Chances are you’ll feel more comfortable meeting virtually when you don’t need to exchange private info like your phone number or your email address for an external platform. Be sure to read our tips on how to make the most of your first virtual date.

PRO: eHarmony’s tech leads to improved matches
In addition to its quiz, the compatibility of your eHarmony matches is also attributed to the site’s scientific algorithm. Keeping up with the latest tech, eHarmony has been using machine learning from 2018 as a way to improve their quality of personalized recommendations to its users. eHarmony’s machine learning technology uses data based on a users’ preference, photo features, data usage, and profile content to offer its users a variety of better matches.
CON: Sketchy consumer reviews
A quick Google search of personal eHarmony testimonies will lead you to some eyebrow-raising reviews on Consumer Affairs.
Despite the dating site’s claim that they verify all users, you’ll find plenty of stories with scammers and fake or inactive profiles. Many reviews on the thread also highlight problems with unauthorized recurring credit card charges and denied cancellation requests after trial promotions.
At Shift Dating, we have noticed an increase in these terrible reviews over the last year. We are keeping a tab on this.
PRO: Daily matches
eHarmony sends its members a list of potential dates and partners every day. All you need to do is review your matches profile and decide if you’re interested enough to send them a message. This means you don’t have to spend your free time swiping and scrolling through endless profiles on different apps.
The algorithm does all the work for you. All you need to do is think of the perfect opener for your latest matches.
CON: No search function
Unlike other dating sites’ premium upgrade features, eHarmony doesn’t let its users look up matches based on their interests or qualities. This can be frustrating if you’re the type of person who is particular about sharing a certain passion or lifestyle choice with the person they want to date.
To make the most of your eHarmony experience, a consultation with a personal dating expert from Shift Dating will set you up for success.
